Dental Crowns Restore Your Damaged Teeth

Dr. Rick Richards places dental crowns for patients in Camarillo, CA, to complete smiles and restore function to the mouth. If you have teeth with a significant amount of decay or that have been chipped, a dental crown could be the best option for you. Crowns fit over a damaged tooth to replace it, filling the gap in your smile.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns help restore teeth that have been compromised by decay or trauma. If a tooth has been chipped or has a significant amount of decay, it can be saved with a dental crown. Crowns are ceramic and designed to blend in perfectly with your natural teeth. Crowns fit directly over a newly reshaped tooth or replace a missing tooth. If you have a compromised tooth, come see us in Camarillo, CA, for a new dental crown!

Getting a crown

Getting a new dental crown takes a couple of appointments but leaves you with a strong tooth restoration. First, any decay is drilled away from the tooth so only the natural healthy tooth remains. If the tooth has been chipped or cracked, the remaining tooth is sculpted down to make room for the new crown around the tooth.

Crowns can also be used in conjunction with dental implants to completely replace a missing tooth. A titanium post is implanted in the jaw and heals for a period of weeks, and then the crown is placed on top of the implant to replace the tooth.

Molds will be taken from your newly prepared teeth or of your mouth in the location of the implant. These molds are to ensure a perfect fit when your custom crown is fabricated. You wear a temporary tooth cap while your custom restoration is being fabricated to perfectly match your smile. At a final appointment, the crown is cemented into place and you leave with a new tooth!

Caring for crowns

If you have crowns in your mouth, it's even more important to adhere to a great oral hygiene routine. Your dentist will recommend brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Make sure you floss in the area of the crown and remove all debris from around it.
